U.S. Senator. Moving with his parents to New York, in 1806, he apprenticed as a clothier and taught school for several years. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1828 and commenced to practice law in Guilford, New York. He was Postmaster of Guilford, (1827 to 1832) and a member of the New York State Senate, (1837 to 1840). In 1844, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Nathaniel P. Tallmadge and reelected in 1845, serving until 1851. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice law and was elected New York State Attorney General, in 1861. He also was appointed United States Commissioner for the final settlement of the Hudson Bay and Puget Sound agricultural claims, in 1864. In 1865, he was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as United States Attorney for the southern district of New York and served until his death.
