Russian Poet and Translator. Raised on Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg, she showed phenomenal philological abilities as a child by learning ancient and modern languages. She became fluent in 11 languages and wrote and translated much her poetry in Russian, German, and Italian. Prior to her early death at age 17, she had written over 1,000 poems. The noted German composer Robert Schumann considered her a child prodigy and set some of her poems to music including "Mailied" (May Song) and "An den Abendstern" (To the Evening Star). Originally buried in Smolenskoe Lutheran Cemetery, in the 1930s her remains were moved by the Soviet authorities to the Lazarevsky Cemetery at the Alexander Nevsky monastery.
