McDermott, Lyle HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. Lyle Charles McDermott, Jr., 94, of Hilton Head Island passed peacefully on Saturday, February 1, 2014 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. Mr. McDermott was a U.S. Navy Pharmacist Mate attached to the Marine Raiders in World War II. He was happily married to the love of his life Irene Junkum for 69 years. He and Irene moved to Hilton Head from Albany in 2006. He is survived by his daughter, Eileen (Karl) Gabrielsen of Hilton Head; and his grandsons, Matthew McDermott of New York City and Brian McDermott of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul McDermott and daughter-in-law, Susan McDermott. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014, from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Delmar. A Mass of Christian Burial to follow. Burial to follow at Albany Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, PO Box 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910, or Sisters of St. Joseph Retirement Fund, St Joseph Provincial House, 385 Watervliet Shaker Rd., Latham, NY 12110.
