Thornton was the son of John Michael Sheehy (1860-1926) & Maud Mary Lecky (1861-1931), of 74 Russell Terrace, Berhampore, Wellington. He served as Private 31187 with the 20th Reinforcements Specialist Company, Machine-Gun Section, 4th Company, NZEF. He was Killed In Action in Ypres, Belgium and buried at Tyne Cot. He had requested, in 1914 to the Town Clerk, that he be buried with his uncle Patrick Sheehy (1844-1879)
