SJOBERG WINS BRONZE STAR FR GALLANTRY - Pfc John C. Sjoberg, son of Mr. & Mrs. Alvar Sjoberg, Stockbridge Avenue, Iron Mountain, grandson of Mr. & Mrs. John Andrews, Jr., 310 East C Street, Iron Mountain, has been awarded the Bronze Medal for Gallantry in Action. He is being awarded for s heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on February 17, 1945 in the vicinity of Halt, Holland, under intense mortar shelling. Pfc Sjoberg, although wounded himself, led 2 groups of litter-bearers along a perilous & unfamiliar route to other wounded men of his combat patrol. Under his leadership, evacuation of the causalities was successfully accomplished. Pfc Sjoberg is serving with the 9th U.S. Army & also holds a Purple Heart Medal for being wounded in action. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1942 & enlisted in November 1942, on his 18th birthday. He was assigned to Infantry &b trained in this country before being sent overseas July 1943.
