Gene C. Holt, age 88, of Hobart, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005 at home.
Gene was a Hobart area resident for 70 years and a retired furniture department manager with Sears, Roebuck & Co. for many years. He was a WW II Army Veteran and a member of the Moose Lodge.
Mr. Holt was the "self-appointed Mayor" of Kelly Street in Hobart.
Gene was born and raised on a farm in Southern Illinois where he developed a lifelong love of horses.
He did not like the color black and per his request those who attend his "Celebration of Life" service are requested to either wear spring colors or something bright and colorful.
Gene is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Gary) Kuwabara of El Macero, California; two grandchildren, Kie and Takeo; brother, Keith (Elois) Holt of Terre Haute, Indiana; many nieces and nephews.
Private burial will take place early Thursday morning at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, Indiana. The public is invited to visit with his family from 11 a.m to 12 noon Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart.
At 12 noon a "Celebration of Life" service will begin with Rev. Larry K. Whitehead officiating.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be directed to the Mound Cemetery, c/o Lyle Bailey, 14643 N. 2100 St., Willow Hill, Illinois 62480.
