Alger, Hudson, died Mar. 24, 1894, age 66 yrs.

Alger, Martha M., wife of Hudson, died Aug. 14, 1886, age 62 yrs.

—Hale Collection of Headstone Inscriptions, Vol. 16, Still Hill Cemetery. Recorded December 12, 1934.

Information recorded from his marker in 1934 gives his death age as 66, and a death notice gave his age as 69.

Hudson Alger married Martha House of South Glastonbury on April 13, 1846, in Glastonbury, Connecticut (Connecticut Town Marriage Records, Barbour Collection). Sarah "Sally" Alger, born about 1793 in Connecticut, was living with the couple in the 1850 and 1860 federal censuses, Glastonbury, Connecticut, and their daughter Sarah M Alger, born about 1850, probably was named for her. Hudson Alger is named in the 1859 will of his father, James Alger, Glastonbury. Also named are Hudson's mother, Polly, and his siblings Horace, Nathaniel (deceased), Henry, and Mary Jane.

In 1875 Hudson's house in South Glastonbury burned, at a loss of about $4,000. It was insured for $2,500 with Hartford County Mutual. (Boston Evening Transcript, Boston, Massachusetts, Wednesday, December 22, 1875, p. 8.)

From census records, Hudson appeared to be farming on a small scale, and, typically, continued to be listed as a farmer, although at some point he also began to keep an inn. In 1870 five persons are listed with their household, who may have been laboring on his farm and/or lodging in his property. By 1880 he was listed as "hotel keeper." The obituary for his daughter, Julia Saunders, says her father kept an inn "for many years."

His wife, Martha, died in 1886, and sometime prior to his own death, the "eccentric" Hudson Alger was committed to the Asylum for the Insane at Middletown, where he died of pneumonia on March 24, 1894. He was buried in Old South Cemetery from the residence in South Glastonbury.
