DECEMBER 8, 1939
Ben Hagan, 85, for many years the only colored resident of Dubois County, and one of the most highly respected citizens of the community, died Thursday, Nov. 30, at his home four miles from Ferdinand.
Mr. Hagan was born in Owensboro, Ky., on Nov. 25, 1854, and came to Dubois County about 55 years ago and settled on a farm which was his life's work.
On Dec. 25, 1885, he married Miss Millie Pinkston, who died 12 years ago. They were the parents of four children, two of whom have passed on. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs Ida Whitaker, and a son Fred Hagan, both of Detroit, Michigan; a sister, Mrs. Eliza Roberts of Grandview, Indiana; and a brother-in-law, Larkin Pinkston, who has lived with him for almost 20 years.
Funeral services were conducted at the home with burial in the family lot one mile from the farm. Rev. Evans of Dale officiated.
