VETERAN DROPS DEAD; RESIDENT HERE 83 YEARS
Hannibal R. Jackson, Hero of Civil War, Served in Union Army Throughout Historic Struggle

Hannibal R. Jackson, 83 years old, a lifelong resident of Lafayette, who served in the Union cause in the civil war from the beginning of that historic conflict until peace was declared, dropped dead Monday morning at 8 o'clock on the porch of the dwelling at 1116 Cincinnati, where he had gone to engage a woman to do his washing.
Mr. Jackson was the son of Lafayette pioneers. His father, Magnus Jackson, came here from Ohio in 1828. The son, in his young manhood, mastered the blacksmiths trade and for many years was engaged in that work in this city. His first employer was James Marstelier, a pioneer carriage shop proprietor. Later Mr. Jackson was a foreman in the old car shops here. He retired twenty five years ago.
For many years he had lived alone at 1613 Elizabeth Street and although his health had been failing for several years he was still able to get about. It is believed that heart failure cased his death. Coroner Harry J. Laws was called and the body was taken to the Franks and Son establishment.
Mr. Jackson's civil war service included a three months' term with the Tenth Indiana volunteers. He answered President Abraham Lincoln's first call for volunteers. When the first term expired he re-enlisted, this time in the Twelfth Indiana Battery andhe was still in uniform when the war ended and he was mustered out. He was a member of Logan Baylor Post, G.A.R.
The only survivor is a brother, Samuel N. Jackson, also of this city, who also served as a soldier in the Union army in the civil war."
