Was related to the Kaye family that had woolen mills in Salem, Oregon and Waterloo, Oregon (a hosiery manufacturing operation). Thus, he was hired to manage and/or work in some of those places. He and his second wife Phoebe and his mother, Sarah, came to Brownsville, Oregon about the 1880s or 1890s. Apparently he has a nice marker and his mother has a nice marker, but his second wife Phoebe had none as of about 10 years ago. Or perhaps more correctly, she shares one with Joseph, but her name and dates never got inscribed upon it. I have photos of his stone and his mother's stone, and will be trying to find them and post them here. His second wife, Phoebe, was a pioneer woman, and I think she should have one. If no one on the Cemetery Association has provided her with one, I would be willing to pay something toward it. If we got several people willing to do the same, it could be done.

His mother, Sarah Cordingley is buried by him, and his wife, Phoebe Ann Cordingley also. She was his second wife, married in 1884. Let me double check that date. It must have been 1894, not 1884. At this point (November 18, 2007) I don't think Pheobe's name has been inscribed on the stone with Joseph. Joseph's parents were William and Sarah. I need to verify that also, as I was told that Joseph's father was also a Joseph.

He had three daughters, Sarah Martha (nicknamed Sadie, I believe)(probably named after her grandmother). I was told she died about 1910 and it was surmised that it was from influenza. This last sentence about Sarah dying of influenza is NOT correct. She grew up and was married and attended Joseph's (her father's) funeral. She was married to an Iwan ind is buried in Salem, Marion County, Oregon. The other daughter, Tracie (Joseph spelled it that way when she was young) or Tracy on the records, was Tracy Gail Cordingley Templeton, married to Leighton Francis Templeton. The latter couple is buried in Browsnville Pioneer Cemetery in Linn County, Oregon also.

On December 1, 2007 some changes are brewing. The woman in this picture appears to have been Joseph's first wife, Mary Ann Amelia Maplethorpe Cordingley, and not his second wife Phoebe Ann Deacon Cordingley.

I have the trunk that belonged to his mother, Sarah Kay (note Kay is sometimes spelled Kaye) Cordingley in which her belongings were shipped to Brownsville, Oregon in the 1890s. She most likely moved to Oregon from England when she was widowed. Through searching the provenance of this trunk, I first thought it was Phoebe's, than Mary Ann's and finally realized it was neither of them, but his mother, Sarah Kay Cordingley, who came from England. So it is very old and it came a long way.

Either the records I am finding are incorrect, or he married Phoebe before Mary Ann had died. I'll be looking into that, as I highly doubt it.

Obituary showed that second daughter, Sadie, married a Mr. Iwan, and they were present at Joseph's funeral. I have a photograph of her with her sister, Tracy (Tracie) Cordingley Templeton, when they both were very young girls (1880s).

Also, there was a Grace A. Cordingley, Joseph's third daughter by Mary Ann Amelia Maplethorpe Cordingley buried with the child's mother (Joseph's first wife)in Illinois. She was just over 1 year old. There may or may not have been a photo of her, but I know I don't have one. The photo I do have is of two very young girls, Tracy (Tracie written by her father) Gail Cordingley and the other child is Sadie (possibly nickname for being named after her grandmother Sarah) Martha Cordingley.
