Vatra Grace Solomon was born in Commerce, Texas, to Neal and Barbara Connelly Solomon. She is a 1964 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and earned her BS degree in elementary education and music from East Texas State University in 1968.

Ms. Solomon taught school in Dallas and Mount Vernon and worked for the Texas State Teachers Association for 16 years before joining her father’s insurance business and opening Solomon Insurance in Mount Pleasant in 1983.

In 1988 she joined the Bill Ratliff for Texas State Senate campaign. With his election she was appointed Executive Assistant to Senator Ratliff in Austin and Mount Pleasant, and continued to serve when he became Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 2001.

Ms. Solomon served as president of both the Mount Vernon and the Mount Pleasant Chambers of Commerce. She was appointed by Governor Mark White to serve as a member of the Sulphur River Basin Authority. In 2001 she was selected to be the first recipient of the Betty King Award for Legislative Staff Service.
