John William Berges was born on September 25, 1857, in the village of Itler, near Frankenberg, Hesse, Germany. With his parents he emigrated to the United States in the year of 1882, settling on a farm about five miles southwest of onaga, where he lived up to the time of his death. June 25th, 1886, he was married to Katherine Mitze, which union was blessed with five children, three sons and two daughters, the youngest son departing this life in early infancy.
Mr. Berges passed away Wednesday morning, February 12th, having attained an age of 61 years, 4 months and 17 days.
He is survived by his wife and four children: Henry J. Berges and Albert Berges, both living southwest of town, Anna, wife of August Zeckser of Alma, Kansas, and Emma, livinging with her mother. Also one brouther, Wm. Berges, and one sister, Mrs. J. Rollenhagen, both living at Big Springs, Nebraska.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, February 14th, at the hous of mourning and at St. Luke's Lutheran church, and interment was given in St. Luke's cemetery.
