Mary was the daughter or Ebenezer and Ann Blount Pettigrew. Sister to B.G. James Johnston Pettigrew. Mary was a nurse and hospital Matron during the Civil War in both Raleigh, NC and Richmond, VA. She was one of the youngest Matrons at Chimborazo hospital at around 20 years old. Mary married a doctor she met there named Peter Fielding Brown on June 3, 1868. The couple had no children. Mary returned to Bonarva after her husbands death and moved with her nieces to Plymouth under much reduced circumstances after the war.She was buried with her family in the Pettigrew Cemetery.
