Charles was the oldest son of Ebenezer and Ann Blount Shepard Pettigrew. Charles was also older brother to B.G. James Johnston Pettigrew. Charles and his wife Jane Caroline "Carey" North Pettigrew lived and were buried at Bonarva Plantation on Lake Phelps. Charles was a farmer. Together, him and Carey had 8 children. Although there is no headstone for his grave, the Pettigrew Papers say the family was too impoverished after the war to purchase one.
