He traveled with his family passing through Indiana, on their way to Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. He stated, in a newspaper interview, on his 96th birthday that at the age of 16, he walked, barefoot, from Danville, Illinois back to Martinsville, Indiana.
He was first united in marriage to Lucinda Stockwell on July 09, 1848 in Morgan County, Indiana. To this union, three known children were born: James Michael Crider, William Harrison Crider, and John Filmore Crider. Upon the death of Lucinda in 1854, he then was united in marriage to Mahala Clarissa Hammons on September 29, 1855 in Morgan County, Indiana. To this union, ten known children were born: Alice Mae (Crider) Reynolds, Thomas Hammon Crider, Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Crider, Robert Sherman Crider, Margaret Elizabeth (Crider) Mitchell, Sarah E. Crider, Charles E. Crider, Arena Idabelle Crider, and Oscar O. Crider.
Lewis was 5' 9¼" in height, blue-eyed, with dark hair and complexion; a farmer, of the protestant faith; politically, a republican; and dedicated to his country having served in two wars. He first served in the Mexican War from February to June, 1847, where he was sent to New Orleans, Louisiana to guard prisoners. He then served in the Civil War, from September 3, 1861 to September 19, 1864, in Co C, 33 Reg., Indiana Infantry, where he was wounded and captured during the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky.
He died in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at the age of 96 years, 2 months, and 8 days from chronic nephritis, and interned on March 19, 1926.
