George Buchanan, Sr., died September 5, 1917, at the age of 88 years and 21 days at the home of his son James, near Okee, Wisconsin, where he had gone for a visit. He was sick only a short time and suffered but little pain. The machinery of life had run its course and stopped.
Mr. Buchanan born in County Bell, En Nor, Tremour, Ireland, of Scotel-Irish parents. At the age of 13 years, he left Ireland with his parents, going to Glasgow, Scotland, where he lived with them until 16 years of age when he immigrated to America and settled in Ogdensburg, New York. Here he lived a number of years and was married to Jane Miller in 1859. They left the United States and settled on a farm in Canada where they worked hard making a home until in 1866 when they moved to Wisconsin and settled near Watertown and from there to near Oregon where they lived until the fall of 1889 when he and his family moved to a farm that he bought near Elroy, Wisconsin. He lived at Elroy until the death of his wife in 1908 when he made his home among his children, receiving the kind attention and care due him. Leave his daughter, Mrs. John Melville of Oregon this Spring, he stopped for a time to visit his other daughter, Mrs. A. L. Ford (Lillian Buchanan), and from there he went to his son, James, expecting to get to his son George's home to visit during the fall months.
Mr. Buchanan's family consisted of three daughters and three sons – Eliza Agnew, who had gone with her husband and family to Portland, Oregon, where she died some fourteen year ago, Mrs. John Melville of Oregon, Wisconsin, Mrs. A. L. Ford, Waunakee, James of Okee, Hugh of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and George of Elroy, Wisconsin, who now owns the old farm. He also leaves thirty-one grandchildren and several great grandchildren besides many friends and relatives to mourn his death.
Mr. Buchanan was the last of six brothers, all of whom lived to a good old age. One brother, Robert, died recently at the age of 93 years.
The funeral was held from Okee to Elroy Friday morning where he was laid at rest beside his loving and faithful wife who had preceded him to that better world where our sorrows and troubles are of the past, and where we hope to meet to part no more.
His family was all present except Hugh who could not come.
Rev. G. N. Carber of Lodi officiated at the funeral service.
