Abner J. (likely James) Tippett was born about 1822 and died about 1883. Most all that we know about him comes from US Census records as well as the death certificates for his children. His parents were likely James and Clarissa Tippett of Jones County.

On 30 Mar 1848, Abner was married to Elizabeth Freise, thought to be a daughter of landower John Freize. Abner was appointed administrator of John's estate upon his death around 1856 and this strongly suggests that he was John's son-in-law but there still is no solid proof.

Abner and Elizabeth at least seven children: Lindsey (married Lemuel Elliott), George (married Caroline Mundine), Abner James (never married), Elizabeth Caroline (married Council Wood Hardison), Martha (believed to have died young), John Williams (married Susan Humphrey), and Betsy (married Christopher Godwin).

Abner enlisted in the Confederate Army prior to the nearby (about 5 miles up the road) Battle of New Bern on 14 March 1862. Curiously enough, he was listed as dead at this battle. This is probably a mistake and he likely served with Company K of the 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Artillery.

Because Abner came to own John Freize's estate, the H.T. Guion map of 1864 shows the location of the Tippett home, deeds, and the location of John's son John's grave, it is thought that he and his wife were laid to rest in the Freize Cemetery. The appeared to live on this land until they died based on the US Census records as well as tax records.
