Ray McGee Cox, Sr., passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018, in Mount Pleasant, SC at age 93 after complications following a fall and hip surgery.

Born February 3, 1925, to Archie Whitner and Ethel Westmoreland Cox in Moore, SC, the second of four boys.

Graduated from Duncan High School before serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater in World War II. He saw action aboard the battleship USS West Virginia at the battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history, and then later at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was a witness to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay in September 1945.

A longtime employee of four General Motors dealers in Asheville, NC, Johnson City, TN, Charleston, SC, and Mount Pleasant, SC, for more than 65 years, most recently at Miller-Baker Cadillac from which he retired at the age of 88.

Survived by daughters, Kathy Psencik of Houston, TX, Julie Hook (Howard) of Beaufort, SC; son, Ray Jr. (Lisa) of Peachtree City, GA; his beloved six grandchildren, Adam, Eric, and Evan (Cynthia) Psencik, John Hook (Tiffany), Carrie Hook Quinn (Steve) and Maria G. Cox; two great-grandchildren, Clara and Chloe Hook); two brothers, Fred Cox (Mickie), and Carroll Cox (Barbara) of Spartanburg, SC.

Preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Ruth Nolen Cox; older brother, Archie W. Cox, Jr.; son-in-law, Jim Psencik.

A service celebrating his life was led by the Rev. Dr. Ron Dillon at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant where he had been a deacon and active member since 1974.

The family received friends one hour prior to the service.

Burial with military honors was held in the Cox family plot at Poplar Springs Baptist Church at Moore, SC at 4:00 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Ken Lee officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant or the charity of your choice.
