John M. Dunaway, age 83, of Sterling, died Saturday, May 12, 2018 at his home.
John was born February 19, 1935 in Decatur the son of Noah and Marguerite (York) Dunaway. He served in the US Air Force and later graduated from the draftsman trade school at Oklahoma State University. John married Carolyn Turner on November 23, 1957 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Lancaster, Ohio. He was employed as an industial engineer at Penberthy in Prophetstown for 35 years. He enjoyed traveling, reading, making musical instruments, bowling, square dancing, camping and enjoyed going on rendezvous with his buddies from the old Northwest Company. John was a Cub Scout leader, Little League baseball coach and also organized and coached girls youth softball in Sterling. He could make or fix anything and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of Sterling; three sons, David (Doughton Lawrence) Dunaway of Chicago, Richard (Debra) Dunaway of Morrison and William (Dana) Dunaway of Parkville, Mo.; two daughters, Cathy Dunaway of Madison, Wis. and Diana (Robert) Hanson of Oregon; one sister, Mary Ann Dunaway of Decatur; one brother, Fred Dunaway of Decatur; seven grandchildren, Zachary Dunaway, Nicholas and Adam Gallardo, and Grant, Kyle, Natalie and Mallory Dunaway; two step granddaughters, Ally Milnes and Katie (Sean) Hassett; two step grandsons, Tom (Sandy) Hanson and Mike Hanson; and one great granddaughter, Jaycee Dunaway.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Marguerite Dunaway; three brothers, David, Walter and Gerry Dunaway; and one granddaughter, Madeline Dunaway.
Visitation will be Friday, May 18, 2018 from 5 – 7 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home, 505 First Avenue in Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling with Reverend Bruce Ludeke officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the American Diabetes Association.
