Clara Belle (Carter) Lawson passed peacefully from this world on November 10, 2017 in Sacramento, California.
She was born December 8, 1931 in Guthrie, KY, and was raised in south-central Kentucky, attending school in Dawson Springs. She was one of nine children of Lawrence Curtis and Pearl Hamilton Carter. She was preceded in death by five brothers: Rick, Russell, John "Big John", Otis "Ode", and Hugh "Boone" Carter; and two sisters, Naomi Petty and Mary Katschke. Her husband, John Lawson, passed away on April 5th, 2017.
In 1951 Clara migrated to Ukiah, California, where she met and married her John David Lawson of Willits, in 1954. John worked briefly in the lumber industry alongside Clara's brothers. They began to raise a family in Ukiah until 1960, when John started work as a newspaper reporter for the Redding Record Searchlight. The family moved, first to Anderson and then in 1961 to Redding, a town they would call home for the next fifty years.
Clara loved being a homemaker, and she and John excelled at creating and nurturing a welcoming household for not only her own children, but her nieces, nephews, and anyone in the community who appreciated a place to laugh and feel loved. Her home was always a warm, crowded, joyous hub for extended family, especially during the holidays, and her cooking was legendary. She also enjoyed volunteering in her childrens' school activities, staying active in the First United Methodist Church, and serving as a poll-worker during elections. Almost every other year, she and John instilled in their kids an appreciation for their roots by organizing wonderful summer vacations visiting "kin" in her beloved Kentucky.
Clara is survived by four sons; David, Douglas, and Kenneth Lawson of Sacramento, and Gregory Lawson of Redding, and one daughter, Robin Reddell of Sacramento. She also leaves behind a brother, Lawrence "Bim" Carter of Roseburg, Oregon, four loving daughters-in-law, five grandchildren of whom she was extremely proud, and a host of remembered nieces, nephews, cousins and "kin" throughout the West Coast and the Southeast.
Services are pending.
