William, Jr., son of William, and Sarah (Capps) Newby, born in North Carolina, August 17, 1783, died in Highland Co., Aug. 8, 1876. His wife was Sarah, daughter of Isaac Overman. She was the granddaughter of Obadiah and Martha (Mills) Overman.
William, Jr. and Sarah (Overman) Newby were married Apr. 1, 1803. In the quaint language of the Quaker marriage ceremony their license states: "Having laid their intentions of taking each in Marriage before several monthly meetings of the people called Quakers, whose proceedings therein after deliberate consideration and having consent of parent and parties concerned - and appearing clear of all others, were approved of by said meetings...
Now for a full accomplishment of their said marriage these are to certify that they, the said William Newby and Sarah Overman appeared at a public assembly of the aforesaid People, met together at Bock Creek meeting house, and according to the order used amongst us, he, the said William Newby taking the said Sarah Overman by the hand declared as followeth, or words to the effect:
"Friends, you are my witnesses that I take my friend, Sarah Overman, to be my wife; promising through divine assistance to be her true and loving husband until death do separate us." Likewise, Sarah Overman, taking William Newby by the hand, made the same vow.
"They, the said William Newby and Sarah Overman, his now wife, she according to the usual practice in Marriage, assuming the name of her husband, have to these presents set their hands, and we whose names are under written, being present at their said Marriage and subscription, have as witnesses subscrived our names, fourth day of the first month 1803: William Newby, Sarah Newby, Thomas Winslow, Axum Elliott, Richard Ratcliff, Keziah Henley, Elizabeth Winslow, Caroline Winslow, Nathan Winslow, Philemon Nixon, William Hastings, Mary Newby, Millascent Nixon, Jesse Hill, Jacob Elliott, John Winslow, Jesse Henley, John Uredlin, William Newby, Sr., Cornelieus Ratcliff, Zebulon Overman, Joshua Newby, Thomas Hill, Ann Hill, Joshua Ratcliff, Elizabeth Ratcliff, Mary Overman."
