Gwen F. Bethune, 77, of Fort Payne, passed away Monday, May 7, 2018 at her home. She was born June 18, 1940 to the late William McKinley Freeman and Nettie Ellen Miller Freeman. Gwen was a member of First Baptist Church. She had a strong heritage of gospel music and loved singing. She was a retired shipping coordinator from Prewett Mills which followed her earlier career as a legal secretary. Gwen enjoyed gifting hand crocheted baby afghans. She loved the University of Alabama, but her greatest love was for her family.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Nathan VanHorn and Dr. Pat McFadden officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12 noon until the 2 p.m. hour of service. The family is accepting flowers or memorial contributions may be made to the ministries of First Baptist Church, 106 Grand Avenue, Fort Payne, AL 35967 or the Bread of Life ministry, P.O. Box 680876, Fort Payne, AL 35968.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bill Bethune; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Todd Roberts; grandchildren, Jordan Roberts and Julianna Roberts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Lucille Robinson, Nell Young, Willodean Goss, Betty Kasinger, Adelle Fleming, Sue Lawson, and Zelma Smith; and brothers, H.T. Freeman, C.D. Freeman, twin brother Wendell “Sonny” Freeman, Leonard Freeman. Hoyt Freeman, and Charles Freeman.
