Allen Geoffrey Redston was born in 1960 to Violet and Brian Redston of Bendigo, Australia. He was one of four children. When he was a toddler, the family moved to Canberra, where Allen attended primary school and made lots of friends. He liked to play Cowboys and Indians down by the Yarralumla Creek with his friends, and he often played outside all day until dinner was ready. He was an active, social, happy child. Friends and family often described him as being a typical six-year-old boy, full of energy and high spirits.

On September 27, 1966, Allen and one of his friends went to their local market to get ice cream. When questioned by a neighbor girl if they had permission, Allen said, "Oh yes, Mommy said I could go," before walking off with his friend. He presumably became separated from his friend shortly afterwards, which is when he went missing. Allen never showed up to dinner, which prompted his father to search the area with no results. The police were called and search parties created. The next day, Allen's body was discovered. He had been brutally murdered and his body later dumped at the creek. No killer was ever caught, but his death was believed to have been caused by serial killer and pedophile Derek Percy.
