Shirley arrived on a warm spring day right along with the flowers and sunshine. She was the oldest of 13 children and for the next 16 years was a big help to her mother, taking care of her younger sisters and brothers. She grew up in Wilson and Elm City, NC and graduated from Elm City High School with dreams of working as a secretary for the government, she was top in her class of both typing and shorthand and her teachers encouraged her to pursue a career in this field.
