110-Year-Old Dies,
Oldest Kane Patient
Services for Peter Mills, the oldest patient at Kane Hospital, were held today at the Hopewell Funeral Home, 7601 Tioga St., Homewood.
Mr. Mills, 110, died Wednesday at the hospital. He had no survivors.
A native of Prince Georges County, Md. Mr. Mills was a bricklayer and plasterer by profession. He was still laying block at age 105.
In a story in The Press last October marking his 110th birthday, Mr. Mills recalled his first trip to Pittsburgh in July, 1881, several days after President James A. Garfield was shot.
He arrived with a shipment of racing colts for the old Gil Bolden Track, where the Belmont car barn later stood.
His next trip to Pittsburgh was in 1892 when he took up his trade in Homestead.
Mr. Mills, who outlived five wives, has lived at Kane Hospital since August, 1971.
Burial was in Restland Memorial Cemetery, Monroeville.
