Known to have been born in Trubchyn / Trypchen.

Hryhory Balamatowski (Balamutowski (ska in the feminine form)) was born in the village of Trubczyn (Polish) /Trypchen (Ukrainian) in the district of Borszczow (Polish) / Borschiv (Ukrainian), in West Ukraine. He was born on November 30, 1875 to Ivan and Gustina (n.Turanska) Balamatowski. I have been told the name could have been Balamut, but it was better to have a Polish name because of what was happening in the country at that time. (Eugene or Terry Balamatowski mentioned hearing it from Mary Batulla).

Hryhory was baptized in the Greek Catholic faith. He had a brother John who came to Canada, he changed his last name to Dotsky, and his wife's name was Julia. There was one brother who remained in Europe (I don't know his name).

Hryhory arrived in Canada between 1908 and 1911. The Ukraine was under Austrian rule when he left the country. Poland, Germany, Russia, Czechoslovakia and Romania were all in control at some point so most Ukrainians were classified as citizens of the country in power at the time they left.

He was in his early thirties when he arrived in Canada, and was classified as a laborer. He apparently had a job in a factory when the family came. His daughter Elizabeth said that he worked as a finishing carpenter during the construction of the Winnipeg Parliament Buildings. Hryhory farmed in Lorette and later in St.Anne / Dufresne. Hryhory was also known as Harry.
