Gloria Woods of Franklin Lakes passed away from complications of a stroke, on Saturday, April 7, at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. She would have turned 92 next month. She was married for 50 years to George C. Woods, who died in 1998. Gloria was born at home, in Boonton, NJ. She grew up in Paterson, NJ, and was the only child of John and Rose Rachelle. She graduated from William Paterson College, and years later, as a working mom, received her Master’s Degree in English from the same. Gloria resided in Franklin Lakes for 66 years, where she and George raised their four sons. From 1948 to 1953 she was a 1st Grade teacher at Franklin Avenue School in Franklin Lakes. For the past four years she resided in Wanaque Reserve in Wanaque, NJ.
Gloria traveled the world. Some of her fondest memories were sailing up the Yangtze River, touring Italy with her family, cruising through Alaskan fjords, where she helicoptered onto a glacier, swimming with her husband through the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and regular trips fishing pike in Canada. When not traveling, she enjoyed leisurely days on her and her husband’s tree farm in the Catskill Mountains. She was an avid fan of the New York Mets.
Gloria and her husband were very active in town organizations. She and George were founding members of the Franklin Lakes Regular Republican Club, and both were members of the fire department, her, of the Franklin Lakes Woman’s Auxiliary.
Gloria leaves behind her son, Buzz and his wife Cathy, of Stockton, NJ, Scott and his husband Albert, of Napanoch, NY, and Doug and his wife Joan, of Callicoon Center, NY. She also had five grandchildren, Ben and his wife Helen, of Durham, NC, Conner, of Doylestown, PA, Devin, of Conshohocken, PA, and Bristol and Canaan, both of Callicoon Center, NY. Gloria’s son, Jackie, passed away in 1967 at the age of 6.
Gloria’s final words were, “I love you all.”
The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday from 6-9pm at Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes. Funeral Services Wednesday 10 am at the funeral home. Interment Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin Lakes, New Jersey
