US Congressman. In 1756, he graduated from Princeton College, was ordained as a minister and preached from 1758 to 1763. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Hartford, Connecticut in 1763. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel and Adjutant General in the Continental Army. In 1778 he was elected to the Second Continental Congress and served until 1782. In 1785, he was appointed Connecticut State Attorney, appointed a judge of the superior court in 1789 and served as Chief Justice from 1796 to 1807. From 1807 to 1809, he was a member of the State House of Representatives and a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1818.
The 1790 census for Coventry documents that he was the owner of three slaves out of 7 reported that year for all of Coventry.
