Anne C. Hughes Kareiva was born July 16, 1923 in Tucson, Arizona, and passed away peacefully on January 8, 2010. Anne comes from the pioneer family of Thomas C. Hughes, her grandfather, who was the Territorial Treasurer in 1889 under his brother Louis C. Hughes, who was Governor. Samuel Hughes, the other brother was Adjunct General of Arizona. Anne attended Borton Elementary, Safford Jr. High and graduated from Tucson High in 1941. She then went on to attend the University of Arizona where she earned her varsity letter by participating in many sports; synchronized swimming, (The Desert Mermaids), tennis, softball and was Captain of the Girls Golf team. In 1945 she joined the service and met her future husband, Charles Thomas Kareiva who she married in 1952. She returned with her family to Tucson in 1963 and finished her degree in Elementary Education at the U of A. Her life was dedicated to teaching, her many hobbies and loving her family and friends. She taught at St. Joseph's parochial school and then many years with T.U.S.D. Her husband, C.T. Kareiva precedes her in death. She is survived by her six children, Peter Louis of Tucson, Ona Kareiva M.D. (Ed) Smith of Easton, MD, Charlette/Terry (Larry) Padilla of Tucson, Patty (Gordon) Simons of Tucson, Mary Michelle Kareiva of San Diego, CA and Paul James (Christine) of Bakersfield, CA., 11 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many loving friends, including her caregivers, Adriana and Karla.
