Sarah Nell (Bass) Boone died Thursday, April 26, 2018 at The Myrtles’ Care Center in Columbia, Mississippi. She was born June 20, 1925 in Prentiss, Mississippi to Clarence and Etta (Delancy) Bass. She graduated from Prentiss High School, and upon graduation, she moved to Columbia, MS where she worked various jobs, including at the funeral home where she would eventually be married. In 1946, she met the love of her life – Thurman Boone, Jr. After a brief and love-filled courtship, they were married. They were married 72 years until Mr. Boone’s death in February 2018. The couple had three children – Joel, Don, and Dale. The family lived many years in Port Arthur, Texas before returning to Walthall County, Mississippi in 1963. They then moved to Columbia, MS in 1990 to care for Mr. Boone’s mother. Nell and Thurman Boone were charter members of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, faithful members of Proctor Street Baptist Church in Port Arthur, TX, and Salem Baptist Church in Walthall County, MS. She was always involved in music ministry, youth work, and prayer circles – a pillar of whatever church they attended. Nell Boone will be remembered as a devoted and fun-loving wife who fully participated with her husband in activities of the Mississippi Chapter of Campers on Missions, Good Sams Club, RV camping and travel. She enjoyed many years living in the county near Sartinville, MS, where she enjoyed growing and canning food, raising donkeys, and participating in community and school functions. She and MR. Boone restored the 104 year old Major John Sartin home in Sartinville, and enjoyed giving tours and hosting events. Many will remember her as a “prayer warrior” whose faith and gift for sharing her abiding faith touched the lives of many people. Her family cherishes the memory of her wonderfully prepared meals, especially her famous lemon icebox pies. She loved arranging flowers and provided beautiful arrangements for many weddings and other events. Visitation will be from 10:00 -11:00 on Saturday, April 28 at Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia. Funeral services will be at 11:00 on Saturday, April 28 at Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Thurman Boone, Jr.; parents, Clarence and Etta (Delancey) Bass; one son, Thurman Dale Boone, two brothers, Clarence Adrian Bass and Thomas H. Bass. She is survived by two sons, Joel Boone (Donna) from Gulfport, MS and Don Boone (Debbie) of Sheridan, WY. She had five grandchildren: Leslie Jorgenson of Big Sky, Montana, Ethan Boone of Sheridan, Wyoming, Silas Boone of Laramie, Wyoming, Brandon Boone of Clinton, MS, and Candice Adams of Gluckstadt, MS. She also had eight great grandchildren. Pall bearers will be Tony Bass, Brandon Boone, Ethan Boone, Steve Gray, Larry Loftin, and Howard Thompson. Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia will be in charge of the arrangements.
