Joel Ray Puffer was born to Philip Edward and Norma Jean (Mansmith) Puffer in Mason City, Iowa, on 22 Aug 1948. He was the youngest sibling to Jerry and Peggy. He grew up on a farm outside Corwith, IA, which his family had farmed for generations. In 1966 he graduated from Corwith-Wesley High School.
Upon graduation he went to school and received his accounting certificate in Mason City, IA. He then moved to Minnesota where he worked and met his future wife, Penny. They were married in April of 1974. The following year their daughter, Heidi, was born in August and soon Allison (January, 1977) and Scott (February, 1980) would make their family complete.
The family moved to Iowa in the early 1980s where Joel worked as a grain elevator accountant. Feeling dissatisfied with his profession, Joel sought the Lord and felt called to enter the law profession. He received a bachelor's degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA. The family then moved to Virginia so Joel could attend Regent University for his juris doctorate which he received in 1993. In 1995 the family moved back to MN where he later passed the bar exam and started practicing law which he did until April of 2018.
Joel encountered many heart related issues in the last year of his life, undergoing two open heart surgeries. He knew his life would be better after this most recent surgery saying he would either have a fuller life here on earth or he would be with Jesus. Joel was surrounded in love by family when he passed away due to complications after surgery on 22 Apr 2018.
Joel loved being with family and friends, taking and receiving photos of loved ones, great conversation, all things computer, and hugs from his grandchildren. He will be most remembered and missed for his enveloping hugs, hearty laugh, spontaneous wit, generous heart and his never ending love.
He is survived by his children Heidi (Justin) Long, Allison (Tim) Stallard, Scott (Lindsey) Puffer; his ten grandchildren, Mallory, Josiah, Abigail, Karston, Emily, Greggory, Connor, Jaylin, Danielle and Tori; his sister Peg (Ken) Williams; and former wife, Penny Puffer. Joel was reunited in heaven with his parents Philip and Norma (Mansmith) Puffer, brother Jerry and many other family and friends.
