Per one researcher when James Mundell was about 15 he came from England with his father to Philadelphia where he became an apprentice.
This researcher indicated that his father, James, (an Irishman), returned to England intent on bringing the family back. It is thought by this researcher that the father James was lost at sea. No record in America or England has ever been found for the "father" James.
The Mundell Family, Descendants of James Mundell and His Wife Margaret (Garrett) Mundell and Leckey's book The Tenmile Country (Pa.) & Its Pioneer Families cover the James and his descendants quite thoroughly.
Sometime after his apprenticeship was over James married Margaret Garrett on 12 Jul 1751 in Wilmington, DE.
The couple had 10 children. They were: James, John Jefferson, Jonathan, Abner, Margaret, Levi, Eli, Eleanor, Andrew & Joseph. (These children had 47 known grandchildren.)
Between 1773-1779 the family left New Castle Co. DE for Greene Co. PA. where the lived the rest of their lives. He and his wife Margaret were members of the local Goshen Baptist Church. James apparently worked as a cask maker & cooper.
James patented 600 acres of land known as "Mundel's Choice" near the forks of the Little Whitely Creek.
This cemetery is part of "Mundel's Choice" land.
James wrote his will on 27 Aug 1805. It was proven on 12 Nov 1805. Since most wills are proven in about 30 days after death an Oct 1805 death date is shown here.
James Mundell may be considered the source of all of the Mundells in the Ten Mile Creek area of Pennsylvania.
