Jane LaForce (Jennie) was the 6th of 10 children born to Washington and Pheraba LaForce in Rocky Fork Township (now Columbia), Boone County, Missouri. By the time she was 18, her family had moved to Mexico, Missouri where she met Charles E. Bruce, also from a large family (the 5th of 11 children). In November of 1872, Jennie and Charles were married.

They had three children: Edna Betsy (Bruce), George B. and Charles Felix.

In 1907, Jennie died of "heart trouble" in their home in Mexico, Missouri. Following her death, her husband Charles and their three children moved to Kansas City, Missouri. From there, Charles Sr moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma along with his son Charles Jr and daughter Edna. It was there in 1916 that Charles Bruce Sr died at the age of 83. Following his death, his body was returned to Mexico Missouri where he was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
