Charles Chaffin “Charlie” Boone, 90, died April 21, 2018 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Born December 31, 1927 in Franklinton, NC, son of the late John Albert and Esther Stanbury Boone, and a resident of Spartanburg for 52 years.

Survived by his brother, Walter Boone; daughter, Mary Boone Pinkowish; sons-in-law, Thomas John Pinkowish and Paul Elwin Rollins, Jr.; grandsons, Alexander Boone Pinkowish and Charles Elwin Rollins.

Predeceased in death by his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Boone; daughter, Wende Boone Rollins; granddaughter, Rachel Marie Evans; and siblings, John A. Boone, Jr. and Rebekah Boone Hardie.

A devout Duke University fan, having received his undergraduate and graduate degrees there as well as serving as the Chief Operating Officer for the Duke University Medical Center before moving to Spartanburg to serve as CEO of the Spartanburg General Hospital System from 1966 to 1995. He led the creation of the first hospital in Barnwell, SC, when he was 25 years old.

Received numerous awards during his lifetime, some of those of which he was most proud included the Distinguished Citizen Award from Wofford College Alumni Association (1980), Citizen of the Year from the Spartanburg Kiwanis Club (1982), a Distinguished Service Award from the South Carolina Hospital Association (1984) and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Carolina in 1989 in recognition of his many accomplishments, including his central role in helping to establish USC-S.

In November of 2017, the Board of Directors of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Services District named him Emeritus Chief Executive Officer of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in perpetuity “in recognition of his enduring legacy of dedication to leadership and patient care.”

A service honoring his memory was conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 27, 2018 at Central United Methodist Church.

Visitation was held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

A private graveside service was held at a later date.
