Sheila was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the daughter of the late Edwin Thomas May, Sr. and the late Mary Frances Todd May. She worked as the office manager and financial officer for the former Avant Salvage Company and the former Speed Check Convenience Stores. Sheila, along with her late husband, Benny, were active members of First Baptist Church of Sandersville where she formerly taught Sunday School, served on the Bereavement Committee, and was a youth leader when her children were young. Sheila was also a member of the Amazing Graces Sunday School Class, a group that diligently cared for and assisted her until her death. She was a longtime member and past president of the Guild where an educational scholarship bears her name. Sheila loved to cook, sew, and grow flowers, but will mostly be remembered for her smile and sweet, gentle spirit. She is predeceased by husband, James Benion “Benny” Avant, Sr.
Survivors are: her children, Jessica Lee Avant and James Benion “Jamie” Avant, Jr., both of Tennille; her siblings, Sheryl M. Lewis and her husband Jimmy of Tennille, and Edwin Thomas “Eddie” May, Jr. of Sandersville; her niece, Courtney L. West and her husband Scott of Sandersville; her great-niece, who called her Nanny, Isabella Lillian “Bella” West; her mother and father-in-law, Joanne W. and Hut Avant of Sandersville; her extended family; the staff and residents of the Tennille Retirement Home; and her caregiver, Maxine Latimer.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until the hour of service at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church.
