Mary Burge, daughter of John and Elizabeth Anderson Wood, was born in 1777 in Louisville, Kentucky. She married George Wood on April 17, 1797, in Louisville. They had at least ten children in 27 years, including the first non-native American born in Clark County, Indiana. They helped establish Wood Township, which would become Borden, Indiana. Mary's husband, George, died in 1819. She appeared in the 1840 census with her son, Benoni Wood, in Wood Township, Indiana. Benoni died in 1844. Mary does not appear in the 1850 census, and is presumed dead between 1845 and 1850, and presumed buried near her husband in Wood Cemetery.
