Martin was also known as Martin Thomas Clasen.

He was born to Peter Jan CLAUSEN and Inge Bahne PAULS on the island of Sylt in Keitum, Keitum Sogn, Tonder Amt, Denmark, which is now in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

He was baptised into the Lutheran Church on 11 JUN 1826 at St. Severin, Evangelical Kirchengemeinde, Keitum Auf Sylt, Denmark

He emigrated to Galveston, Texas, USA, in February, 1848. He was naturalized on 02 JUN 1854 in Galveston, Galveston Co, Texas.

He married Josephine Maria Elise "Lizzie" KUHN on 5 MAY 1856 in Galveston.

In his early years he was a sailor, then he and his wife ran a boarding house in Galveston on the corner of Market & 19th Street called Clasen's House.

About 1877, the family moved from Galveston to Clear Lake, probably near what is now El Lago.

The Markee Family cemetery is abandoned and most of the markers are missing, if they ever existed. A cenotaph has been erected for Martin in the Seabrook Cemetery.
