She also helped bring up four little neighbor girls who were left motherless. One of them, Mrs. J.S. Kincaid, wrote this tribute to her:
" I have never heard her speak harmfully of anyone nor have I heard an unkind word spoken of her. It was not her way. She came regularly to help us and give us advice and counsel and I went often to her house. There was always a spread of light bread, butter, and honey. Once the call of mother's love was too strong and I ran away to spend the afternoon with her."
One of the last things Mrs. McGimsey said was her message to loved ones: "Tell them I am dying happy."
Her funeral was conducted at Mountain Grove Church by the Reverends A. Burgess, B.C. Reavis, and J.M. Varner.
