James is a son of Alfred Kossuth Dabell and Julia Ann Taylor. He married Abbie Burnett on May 14, 1909 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They became parents to five children: Stillborn in 1910, Nolan James, Burnett, Otis Julian, and Austin Rich.

From The Ogden Standard-Examiner (Ogden, UT) - Thursday, July 8, 1965:

BURBANK, Calif. - James L. Dabell, 81, formerly of Ogden, died this morning in Burbank, Calif.

He was married to Abbie Burnett in Idaho. They later received endowments in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mrs. Dabell died in 1960 in Burbank.

Among the survivors are one daughter and three sons, Burnett Dabell, Nolan Debell, Austin Dabell, and Otis Dabell, all of California.

Funeral services will be held in Burbank.
