James Melvin Kale Lutz
Aug. 31, 1953 — March 16, 2018

James Melvin Kale Lutz passed away suddenly on Friday, March 16, 2018, at his home in Fairfield, California. Known to friends and family as Kale (Hawaiian for ‘Charles’), he was born on Aug. 31, 1953, in Vallejo, California, to Francis Alene (Joiner) and Raymond Koliaokalani Lutz, Col. (Ret), USAF.

As a young child and Air Force ‘brat,’ Kale traveled the world, had great adventures and made friends everywhere he went. Like most children who grow up in military families, Kale attended schools in many different locales, and graduated from Vanden High School in 1971, where he excelled in wrestling.

Following graduation, Kale made his home in Fairfield and loved visiting Hawaii to see his mom and dad, sister and brother on Oahu, and his many cousins and friends on Molokai and the big island of Hawaii.

Kale loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle(s) everywhere, especially with like-minded friends on out-of-town trips and around the local area, including Vacaville, Rio Vista, Sacramento, etc. He also enjoyed working on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle(s), and various cars, trucks and other equipment he owned over the years. He delighted in the discovery of interesting items that came his way and often found a place for many of them in and around the house. He was happiest spending his time tinkering with anything in reach.

Most of all, Kale loved his friends and will be remembered for his kindness and gentle spirit. He was happy to help whenever asked, would share whatever he had (which at times wasn’t a lot), and could be depended on to lend a hand day or night. He loved and appreciated the ladies in his life, but wasn’t the most reliable partner, and he was always sweet to children.

Kale will be greatly missed by all his friends and family.

Kale was the youngest of the four Lutz children and is survived by his sisters, Regina Malie Lutz, Rachelle ‘Momi’ Fitchett (Arthur); and his brother, Raymond ‘Haku’ Lutz, Jr.

His ashes will be returned to his family in Kailua, Oahu, and a celebration of Kale’s life is planned for the near future.
