Diogenes searched for an honest man; our Lord, Jesus Christ found him, Jerome "Jerry" Tomko, and took him home on April.
Jerry was a son of the late John Sr. and Margaret Pelleck Tomko and was born in Pottsville, Sept. 14, 1946.
He graduated from Saint Clair High School, where he played basketball and football and was a member of the National Honor Society. He graduated from Penn State University with a degree in aerospace engineering and worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Conn., as an assistant project engineer. One of his first assignments with the Compressor Group was helping design the JT9D engine which was the power plant for the Boeing 747. He retired to Bear Creek after 34 years at Pratt.
He was a lifelong fan of Penn State Football and traveled from Connecticut to attend games with his twin brother, Jack who preceded him in death. He was a longtime supporter of the Saint Clair Legion 719 and Saint Clair AMVETS Post 142.
Following successful quadruple bypass surgery, Jerry gave thanksgiving by becoming a Eucharistic minister. Although he was raised in the Ukrainian Byzantine Rite, he served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Mark's Roman Catholic churches. He was an active member of the Bear Creek Lions Club until becoming ill with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Myelodysplastic Syndrome. He fought both diseases valiantly, without complaint. He was devoted to his church, family and friends and everyone knew they could rely on Jerry for help when they needed him.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elaine Malafarina, and son, Jerome Joseph Tomko, Bear Creek. He leaves his aunt, Mary Pelleck Gumrot, Delaware; his brother-in-law, Joseph Malafarina and wife, Betty, State College; niece, Susan Lincoski, DVM, and her husband, Chris Lincoski, Maryland, and their, daughter, Paige, State College. He also leaves numerous cousins including cousin - more like a younger brother - Frank Komykoski, who phoned him faithfully each Sunday to discuss Penn State football and solve the world's problems.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday with a viewing at 9:30 a.m., prior to Mass at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Bear Creek. Out of concern for the health of those who have lung problems and allergies or chemical sensitivities, the family asks that the service, and those attending, be fragrance-free. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Saint Clair, with Monsignor Myron Grabowsky officiating. A memorial service at St. Mark's Church in Thornhurst is planned for the future. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Relief Services, 228 W. Lexington St., Baltimore, MD 21201-3443 or St. Elizabeth/St. Mark's Church, 5700 Bear Creek Blvd., Bear Creek Township, PA 18602-0025.
