William Pratt Pearson
February 5, 1924 – January 7, 2002

ST. GEORGE, Utah - William Pratt Pearson, age 77, passed away Monday, January 7, 2002, at his home in St. George, Utah, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, with his daughter and his sweetheart of 57 years at his side holding his hand. He was born February 5, 1924 in Arco, Idaho, to Albert Russell and Geneva Therissa Pratt Patterson. He attended schools in Moore, Mackay, and Leadore, graduating from Leadore High School in 1941. He also went to machinist and drafting school at the University of Idaho Southern Branch, and also Weber College.

He wanted to serve his country when World War II broke out, so he tried to enlist on December 8, 1944, but didn' t pass the eye chart exam, so he went to work in the shipyards in Bremerton, Washington. Soon he decided that was not enough and decided he would go into the service. He wanted in so badly that he memorized the eye chart so he could pass the Navy physical exam. He served in the Navy during World War II in the 7th Pacific Fleet.

He married the love of his life, Beth "Betsy" Blattner, on June 25, 1944, and they had many happy years raising their four daughters. He lived in the Arco area most of his life and worked at the INEL on the Arco desert for many years as a mechanic. He managed Adamson' s Auto Parts in Arco and then taught auto mechanics and welding at the Mackay High School, Idaho, until his retirement in 1986. Then they started spending their winters in St. George.

They moved to St. George, Utah, in 1992. He was well known for his expertise as a mechanic and could fix most everything with an engine. He loved riding motorcycles and snowmobiles and also enjoyed outdoor activities, such as camping. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served in many capacities, including being a counselor in the bishopric and stake clerk. He loved working the baptistry in the St. George Temple. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a kind, thoughtful, and loving man, and was known for his sense of humor, positive attitude, and willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and former students.

He is survived by his wife, Beth " Betsy" of St. George; four daughters, Suzette Finch of American Fork, Utah, Connie (Glen) Lassen of Sandy, Utah, Trudy (Bruce) Barnes of Heyburn, Idaho, and Lisa Pearson of West Jordan, Utah; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-children, with two more on the way; and a sister, Ruth Waddoups of Moore, Idaho. He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Funeral services will be held at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 300 W. St. George Blvd., on Friday, January 11, 2002, at 2 p.m. There will be a visitation at 12:30 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be in Tonaquint Cemetery, St. George, Utah, under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary.
