Died at his residence, 745 South Orange Grove Ave., after an illness lasting nearly a month. While Mr. Gates had not been in the best of health for the past few months none of his friends realized the seriousness of his condition, and the announcement of his death will come as a great shock to them. Born at Warsaw, NY, son of Seth Merrill Gates and Fanny Jennette Parson Gates. His father, Seth M. Gates, was a well known abolitionist and his house at Warsaw was a recognized station on the so-called "underground railroad". His mother was a great great granddaughter of Jonathan Edwards, president of Princeton, and she bequeated to him the blood of that stern, uncomprising old Covenanter. When he was 24 years of age he went to Lake City, Minn., as an investor and was married there to Helen L. Ray, the daughter of Rev. John W. Ray. Later he moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where for 8 years he engaged in a general banking business. He then made his home at 2628 Portland ave., Minneapolis, Minn. which had been his residence since, except for the time spent in California. Mr. Gates came to California in 1908 and was so enthusiastic about Pasadena that in later years he spent a great deal of his time here, residing at 745 South Orange Grove Ave. Survived by his wife, his only child, Mrs. Raymond Mixsell, of Pasadena; a sister, Mrs. Wm. Milne of Albany, NY and 2 brothers, Dr. Merrill E. Gates of Washington, D.C., and Prof. Lewis E. Gates of the same city. Mr. Gates will be missed by the community in which he delighted to live. His cheery, courteous manner made him a host of friends all over the country and his sterling worth and upright Christian character endeared him to everyone who knew him.
