For several years Miss Gates had been unable, because of failing health, to take that place in the active life of the community which her disposition would have led her to take; and for the last 3 months she had been entirely confined to the house by the illness which finally overcame her; but even in ill health and suffering, her courage, her cheerfulness, her never failing interest in the welfare of her friends and her constant trust in Our Risen Lord was a model which many a life whose outward display had been greater, might well admire and imitate. Miss Gates had always made her home in Warsaw, and leaves behind her friends of a life time, who will not soon forget her quiet humor and her kindly affection. Her membership in the congregational church of this place dates from the year 1850; and though she spent many consecutive months away from Warsaw at different times in the homes of relatives and friends elsewhere, she never lost an abiding interest in and affection for the church which witnessed her profession of faith. Besides her own personal friends, Miss Gates has a strong claim on the interest of the whole village, since, of the immediate family of the late, Beth M. Gates, she was the last member resident in Warsaw. The funeral was on Saturday the 8th of April, and even the severity of the weather did not keep a large number of her friends from showing her, in death, by their presence at the funeral service, the regard which they had so frequently evinced for her in life. She is buried in the family lot in the cemetery of this place, next to the grave of her sister, Harriet; and the hearts of her friends here will ache for their own loss, marked by the well made grave, even while they rejoice that another soul has joined those dear ones who went before her into the presence of the Redeemer.
