She was born in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of the late Mildred and William L. Helton, Sr.
Ruth was a lifetime member of Second Baptist Church and attended Mercy School of Nursing before she married and had her three children. She enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved gardening,cooking and taking care of her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Karen Simpson Leatherman (Jay), Kim Simpson Layman (Matt), Susan Simpson Bumgardner (Mark); sister-in-laws, Sarah Helton, Faye Staton and Vernie Bumgardner; grandchildren, Lisa Tallman, Kassi Mullis, Alicia Bumgardner, David Bumgardner, Jennifer Bumgardner, Thomas Bumgardner, Meagan Lanning and Jerrica Harris; great-grandchildren, Ryker and Emery Harris, Avery Lanning and Hadley and Eleanor Mullis.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Purvis Wilson Simpson, brother, William L. Helton, Jr. and grandson, Corey Andrew Leatherman.
