Donald L. Schafer, age 90, of Ida Grove, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018, at the Horn Memorial Hospital, of Ida Grove, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Christensen - Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa. Rev. Chad Lierman will officiate. Committal services will follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery of Ida Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at the Christensen - Van Houten Funeral Home, of Ida Grove, Iowa. Donald Lee Schafer, the son of Herman and Lillian (Schluter) Schafer, was born on February 5, 1928, in Wall Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Ida Grove High School with the class of 1945.

On June 26, 1950, Don married Wilma Dean Nippert in the United Methodist Church of Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple made their home in Ida Grove, Iowa, and were blessed with three children: Vicki, Mark, and Craig.

Don owned and operated the local furniture and carpet store for thirty years. He was a 76 year member of the Ida Grove Golf and Country Club. He served in the National Guard for 12 years, was a past member of the local Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club.

After retirement, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s school functions and sporting events. A family man, Don was always supportive of his entire family. His passions in life were golfing, fishing, and sports (a true Iowa State fan!!!).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Lillian Schafer; wife Wilma Schafer; infant son, Mark Schafer; and great granddaughter, Jillian Grace; brother Virgil (Alice) Schafer and sister Joyce Schafer.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Craig Schafer of Ida Grove, Iowa; daughter, Vicki (David) Will of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren: Matthew Will of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Eric Will of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Jodi (Adam) Lansink of Ida Grove, Iowa, Jamie (Seth) Corbin of Ida Grove, Iowa; five great grandchildren: Ellie, Maila, Brylie, Blake, and Kendra; brother-in-law, Eldon (Vicki) Nippert of Cushing, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
