Businessman, Sports Team Magnate. He amassed billions of dollars with his companies Waste Management and Blockbuster Video, while bringing Major League Baseball and professional hockey to Florida with the Florida Marlins and Florida Panthers. Additionally, he was the proprietor of the Miami Dolphins from 1994 until 2009. Born Harry Wayne Huizenga, his father was a cabinet maker, his parents divorced after his family relocated to Florida during his teenage years. He earned wages pumping gas and hauling a truck, prior to attending Calvin College and later serving with the United States Army. In 1968, he started out with one garbage truck and eventually acquired additional hauling companies which evolved into Waste Management, which became the largest waste disposal company in the United States during the early 1980s. After taking over proprietorship of Blockbuster Video (1986 to 1994), he took the company to a multi-billion dollar entity which operated in eleven countries globally. Other associated companies include Auto Nation, Extended Stay America and Republic Services. During his ownership of the Florida Marlins (1992 to 1998) the franchise captured the world championship in 1997. While owning the Florida Panthers (1993 to 2011), the team reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 1996.
