Donald was born August 19, 1927 in Gilman to Elmer J. and Della (Kuhlman) Benson. His childhood was spent in Thawville and he attended and graduated from Thawville Schools.
Don married Reta L. Conn on February 18, 1951 at the Onarga Methodist Church, Onarga, IL. She survives.
Surviving daughters are Diana (Ronald) Craig of Galva, IL., Julie (Michael) Crowley of Thawville and Sharon (Kim) Bloomquist of Fairfax, VA.
He is also survived by five grandchildren, William Craig, Erin Book, August Crowley, Brent Bloomquist, Karin Bloomquist and three great-grandchildren.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents.
He was a member of the Thawville Congregational Church and also a Deacon Trustee and church choir member.
Donald sang for many weddings and funerals. He was a Military Police Veteran serving in the United States Army and member of the Thawville American Legion Tracy Smith Post 700. Donald played the baritone in the Army Band at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He served for many years on the Roberts Thawville School Board and was P.T.A. President. Donald was also a Farm Bureau board member.
He enjoyed building and flying radio controlled airplanes and hosting yearly fly meets at his farm.
