Hewitt Brooks Britt was born in March 16, 1961, in Lumberton, to Sarah William Britt and the late N.C. State Sen. Luther Johnson Britt Jr. He died on June 21 in Mill Valley, Calif.. due to a massive heart attack.

Brooks graduated from Lumberton High School in 1979, where he was the drum major of the band and editor of the annual. He graduated from Duke University in 1984, where he was assistant gymnastics coach. He spent three years in New York City in marketing with the firm of John Frankle Productions. He came back to Durham, N.C., where he worked with the N.C. Arts Council and the N.C. Museum of Arts as the producer and director of the Park Amphitheater overseeing the completion of the park and the production for the first year.

Brooks then resided in Topanga, Calif.m as the owner, writer, producer of BENT Enterprises as a creative consultant. In 1998 he moved to Mill Valley, Marin County, Calif. and served as an educational mentor and as an admission contact representative for Duke University. At the time of his death, he felt honored to be an integral part of the planning and development of the Terry Sanford 50th year anniversary at Duke University.

Brooks was preceded in death by his father, Luther Johnson Britt Jr.; his paternal grandparents, Luther Johnson Britt Sr., and Beta Elkins Britt; his aunts, Mary Brooks Britt and Dr. Marie Britt Rhyne; his maternal grandparents, Dewey and Rilla Hewett Williams; and his uncle, Robert Wilton Williams.

He is survived by his mother, Sarah Williams Britt; his brothers, Luther Johnson Britt III and wife Fordham, and Lee Elkins Britt; his sister, Sarah (Sally) Beta Britt Rich; his nephews, Luther Johnson (Luke) Britt IV, Williams Baldridge Britt and John Mitchell Rich; his nieces, Anne Christopher Britt, Lillian Jewel (Lilly) Britt and Amy Rich Ford; his aunt, Doris Williams Bryan; his cousins, Gordon Bryan and wife Debi, Cynthia Bryan Wheleham and husband Lee, Bob and Dave Williams and Teresa Marie Rhyne.

A memorial will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, in the First Baptist Church Chapel, Seventh and Walnut St., (chapel on Seventh St., Side), Lumberton. The visitation and reception in the ladies parlor will follow the service.
