Mrs. Sarah Williams Britt, of Lumberton, died Nov. 23, 2016, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton.

She was born Dec. 29, 1930, to Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Williams of Lumberton. She graduated Lumberton High School, Class of 1948 and earned a Bachelor of Science from Wake Forest College in 1952. She married her lifelong classmate, childhood friend, and neighbor, Luther J. Britt Jr. in 1955. Together they had four children, Sarah Beta Britt Rich, Luther Johnson Britt III, Hewitt Brooks Britt, and Lee Elkins Britt.

She taught Physical Education and Science in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Robeson County Schools — Orrum and Lumberton. She also served on the Board of Education for the Lumberton City Schools.

After the death of her husband in 1978, Mrs. Britt relocated to Durham, where she worked for the State of North Carolina at C.A. Dillon School in Butner as the director of Volunteer Services. She ended her career at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh in 1995 as director of Volunteer Services.

In 1997, she returned home, where she resumed working for causes in her community. She championed the preservation of Robeson County's history. She served for many years as president of Historic Robeson Inc. One of the most significant accomplishments of her tenure was the continued restoration of the Proctor Building in downtown Lumberton, where she worked to remodel the garden adjacent to the building. She would also oversee the construction of restrooms and a catering facility to allow for events to be held on site. A champion for the rights of animals, Mrs. Britt served as Robeson County's first Animal Cruelty Prevention Officer.

Mrs. Britt wass preceded in death by her husband, the late N.C. Senator Luther J Britt Jr.; her son, Brooks; her parents; her brother, Robert Williams; and her son-in-law, John Rich.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally B; her sons, Johnson, his wife Fordham, and Lee; her grandchildren, Luther "Luke" Johnson Britt IV and his husband Brad Boileau, Anne Christopher Kemp and her husband Travis, Williams Baldridge Britt, and Lillian Jewell Britt; stepgrandchildren, Amy Rich Ford and John Mitchell Rich; her sister, Doris Williams Bryan; two nieces and three nephews; like a daughter and devoted friend, Ginny French Lyles; and many special friends.

The family will receive friends at the home of Fordham and Johnson Britt, 3845 Kale Drive.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Lumberton, Dr. David Elks officiating. The visitation with the family will be held following the service in the Cherry Fellowship Hall.
